CHEM1221 – General, Organic & Biological Chemistry 86.1

Lecturers are better than those teaching chem1100, but they still didn't make me engage in lectures. Course content is kinda hard but you still can understand it if working hard. However, the difficulty of final exam was the hell, which was much much harder than class and PASS class questions.

CHEM1221 – General, Organic & Biological Chemistry 46.4

The course itself teaches really interesting content. However, the exam mostly covers content that wasn't even taught. PASS resources (which are usually great for study) provided no insight into actual exam-type questions. Past exams also weren't useful in studying. Overall, I felt fooled by this course. The labs are also badly done, as each lab has about 20 students who have no idea what they're doing, and 1 tutor only.

** I should mention that module 1 and its corresponding mid-semester exam were great. Content was taught well, and the exam questions were appropriate and realistic for first year chemistry students.

Positives
  • Interesting content.

  • Labs are badly organised.

CHEM1221 – General, Organic & Biological Chemistry 48.9

Honestly, I had no idea what was going on in this course.Effie is the worst lecturer... Most of the content is brushed over and not explained properly! The lecturers know their stuff, but when they try to teach the side pass all the important steps and leave you wondering what has happened! Also, the quizzes are quite difficult and the exams fool you.. you will think you have understood content but really you havent! Past exams are not that similar either. The course is annoying because it is new and the content and teaching staff etc are all being adjusted newly. The content would be much easier if there were different people teaching it who were approachable (Sharpe is the only person i am excluding from this comment because he is generally good)! BIOC2000 basically teaches you all the content from chem1221 IN A MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE WAY!

Is lecture attendance necessary?

Well if you dont attend you wont be able to understand what is happening at all because when they write stuff its jumbled up, you cant comprehend the accents, and half the time they may stuff up recordings

Is the textbook necessary?

NOPE..

Positives
  • They made reference between chemical structures and everyday things we use
  • Will give some knowledge for second year courses
Negatives
  • Practicals are very draining and intense
  • Most lecturers will skip information which will leave you guessing
  • The content is wishy washy
