The course is incredibly poorly designed. Quizzes were an absolute guess and if you don't automatically guess well you are never taught how to get better. I ended up getting the highest grade for the course in my semester but I still think it was horribly done. Needs 3rd year stats and they never seem to teach it - they always "realise" 6 weeks in that no one knows what suppression or mediation is yet and just scramble to explain it in 30 minutes. Just teach it in the first 2 weeks?

For a course that’s compulsory for BPsychSci students, you’d think the coordinator would put more effort into ensuring the students are all learning. Instead, there is an overwhelming ‘too bad’ ‘gotcha’ mindset from the staff, a stark contrast to other courses.
The main activity of lectures is to interpret obscure graphs, with the learning goal of thinking deeply about the causes of such graph results. However, rather than allowing students to view these graphs during the week and engage in such thinking to overcome their initial surface interpretations, the graphs are presented minutes before students are asked to provide an assessable interpretation while under a time limit, often leading students to provide instinctual gut reaction interpretations and miss information that they may have identified if they’d been allowed to find key background information during the week.
The major assessment is delivered without establishing that students have the a) spss knowledge/skill, b) understanding of statistical regression or c) ability to conduct comprehensive online data collections, and it doesn’t allow for students to incorporate the feedback of tutors, as there is no second submission required. There are some pathetic attempts by tutors to give students crash courses in what is considered a significant regression, but this had to be unlearned the following year in PSYC3010.
This is a horrendous course. Taken Semester 2 2020, not 2017

Hands down the worst course I've done as part of my Psychological Science honours degree. It's a second year compulsory course that requires knowledge from third year courses. The lectures have no usable content towards the end of lecture quizzes, the tutorials don't teach you how to write the assignment, let alone use SPSS (software) to complete the assignment to write results from. It's the most poorly administrated course I've ever touched, sending emails to my tutor and getting replies that she doesn't exactly know sure. The first time I've got a visual powerpoint slide explaining what regression and correlations actually are was one week after the assignment (20% of your grade - with no criteria sheet and was told to go off the ECP!) was due. The first 1.5 hours of the lecture is just one on one questions from other students about graphs unrelated to anything. Waste of time, don't see how they expect us to know how to use SPSS or get a decent grade when the tutors have no clue what they are doing and every assessment piece feels seperate to each other. 2020 Semester 2

Fantastic course and has helped me understand statistics better than any of the stats courses. The assignment is tough! The weekly graphs are hit & miss in terms of difficulty. I’ll use these skills for life. 2020 semester 2. No option to say 2020 below.

This course was extremely interesting content wise and Bill is an entertaining lecturer. The quizzes were challenging and though-provoking. However, the assignment was particularly horrible. To write the assignment well, it is essential to have some third year psychology statistics knowledge which we were not prepared for at all as this is a second year psych subject. As this course is not a statistics course, they lecturer and tutors did not explain the required statistics knowledge (or SPSS knowledge) well, while still expecting us to justify our statistical decisions in the assignment. If this course was completed AFTER the cohort had completed third-year statistics, I believe it would be a lot more beneficial for students.

This was easily the best psych subject I've ever taken. Bill Von Hippel is an engaging, funny, and intelligent lecturer, and the tutors were very helpful too. This was not an easy course, but it really forced you to apply yourself the whole way through semester. I am continually grateful for all I learnt during this course, and for Bill who decided to challenge everyone instead of simply waving us through the course.

This course was extremely different from your average psychology course. Rather than covering content it attempts to alter your ways of thinking and give you a new perspective on problem-solving. The weekly quizzes are difficult, covering content from the readings, tutorials and lectures. They certainly challenge you. The lectures are very engaging and the tutors were all fantastic.
